Beloved San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz may have exhibited his work at institutions like Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum and even the Louvre, but he’ll just as happily open up his South San Antonio Snake Hawk Press studio for a curious local. Cruz’s art calls on a combination of initially disparate-seeming inspirations — from taco trucks to pop art, auto mechanic logos to classic technique — to create a body of work that’s at once visually lighthearted and sharply observant of the bicultural experience of growing up in South Texas. Here, a hand-screenprinted example of Ortiz’s oeuvre.
